On December 5th, the 2021 National Kabaddi Sports referee and coach training course held by Sichuan Social Sports Guidance Center in Southwest Petroleum University was accomplished. 179 students will promote kabaddi sports in Sichuan province.
Kabaddi, similar to the game “Eagle Catches Chickens”, became an official event at the Beijing Asian Games in 1990. In the 1990s, some attention was paid to this sport in China, but it has not been promoted on a large scale. In June 2021, the Social Sports Center of the General Administration of Sport of China held the first National Open of Kabaddi Sports and thereafter it became a popular sport in China and was included in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.
SWPU is the first unit to initiate Kabaddi sports in Sichuan Province. As one of the few second-level referees of Kabaddi in China, Chen Jizhe, a PE teacher, tried to teach Kabaddi in public PE class in 2020. At the end of September this year, SWPU kabaddi Sports Team was formally established, including 2 coaches, 16 sportsmen and 16 sports women. The players come from SWPU football team, basketball team, table tennis team and track and field team. At present, they get trained for 4-5 hours every week. This is the first Kabaddi sports team in Sichuan Province.(By Peng Dan)
