Southwest Petroleum University (SWPU) undergraduate education began with the founding ofthis institution in 1958. As the university has been expanding ever since,there are now 16 schools, and 1 research institute of new energy andunconventional oil and gas, all of which have undergraduate students.    

SWPU offers 68 undergraduate programs which cover 8 subject groups: science, engineering,management, economics, arts, law and education. 60 of those programs registered students in 2016. Amid these programs, 8 are recognized as state-level characteristic programs, 16 as provincial- level characteristic programs, 1 as state-level pilot program, and 2 as provincial-level pilot programs.    

Besides the programs, there are 1 national base of culture-oriented education for college students, and 11 undergraduate talents cultivation bases.    

As for specialized quality courses, there are 1 state-level specialized specialized  quality course, 36 provincial-level quality courses, 1 state-level resources sharing course, and 14 provincial-level resources sharing courses.    

In terms of teachers’ teams and MasterTeachers, SWPU has 2 state-levelteachers’ teams, 7 provincial-level teachers’ teams and 9 provincial-levelMaster Teachers.    

To support teaching and research, SWPU has a variety of laboratories, centers andbases on different levels, which are as follows:

l  3 state-level experimental teaching centers,

l  2 state-level experimental  virtual simulation teaching centers ,

l  2 strategic alliances for technology innovation of petroleum industry,

l  24 key provincial-level laboratories (or engineering techniques researchcenters),

l  5 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstrationcenters,

l  4 provincial-level experimentalvirtual simulation teaching centers,

l  2 scientific research bases on provincial level,

l  37 scientific research bases in collaboration with companies of petroleum industry

l  5 campus-level research centers,

l  14 experimental teaching centers,

l  1 engineering training center,

l  and 1 petroleum industry practice base.

This university has the environment for the students to lay a solid academic foundation, cultivateall-round competencies, take international perspectives, and enjoy physical andmental well-being.    

Educational Orientation    

In linewith the Western Development Strategy of China and the Strategy for the Rise of Central China, SWPU prepares students in such a way that they will be competent enough to join in the efforts of the development of these two regions.    

SWPU’seducation is also oriented towards the oil and natural gas industry at home andabroad so as to promote the development of domestic as well as foreign economy.

In 2018,SWPU has an enrollment of 34,413 full-time students, of which 29,367 are undergraduates, accounting for 85.34%.
